Being Released from YW

I am going to be released from YW this Sunday and I am completely and utterly bummed about it. I have never had such reservations about being released from a calling as I have this one. I have been bumped around as 2nd counselor through three different presidencies but I didn't quite make the cut this time around.
I love working with the YW but I especially loved being there with my two oldest girls. Some people think that it is not good for parents to be in a calling where their children are but I think that statement is completely and utterly false. I LOVE SERVING WITH MY CHILDREN! I love being with them outside the home environment and having fun together. I do feel kind of cheated that I only got to be with Hannah for a few months.
Some things that I have learned in my short time about the girls in YW.
*The girls need to feel that you love them first and foremost. They need to feel accepted and safe when they are around you. They need to know that they won't be judged on what they have or haven't done. They need to feel comfortable enough to express their thoughts and opinions without the fear of being criticized or put down.
*You need to have FUN with the girls. They need to be excited to come to YW's. They should be excited about coming each week and being together. I am not saying that it has to be a roadshow every week but it needs to be interesting and something they are interested about. I have started turning over more responsibilities to the class presidency lately and I think that the girls enjoy the challenge.
*You need to show interest in the girls outside interests and attend something that they are competing in or starring in every once in awhile, even if it is something that you have no interest in. They need to know that you care enough about them to step outside the box. It is fun to see them in their own element.
*Girls love handouts! Sister Stokes is so good about giving the girls a handout every week and they love it. We even made a handout keeper for them to put them in.
I am sad to be released and have struggled because of it. I guess I just love the girls so much and I am sure that their new leaders will also. It is just hard.
This pending release has made me take a step back and look at my life, or maybe it is a mid-life crisis or something. I put so much time and energy into my callings. I can't help it because my mother is that way and I am a stay at home mom and all I have is my family and my church. I really need something else to direct my thoughts and energy towards. I have thought about two possible home businesses I could do. #1 I have experimented and enjoyed putting together pictures and video to music and I thought that this is something that I could do as a service from my home for weddings, funerals, birthdays, graduations, etc. Anyone know anyone else out there who has experience with this? #2 I thought about contacting Shannon & Dan and bringing food storage items to this valley than we can can't get through the cannery. I think that there is a need here for something like this.
Thanks to all my great friends and their listening ears. I love you all so much! I am so grateful for a loving husband who loves me in spite of my misgivings. He is my rock. I do know that Heavenly Father can see the big picture and that I need to have faith that He will always do what is best for me and my family.
Any advice or contacts out there anyone can give me about my two possible home businesses would be appreciated! Thanks!

Going Private

I am going to follow my sister Jaime and go private with my blog. There are some people out there that I would rather not have them lurking around on my blog. If you want to view my pages please email me your address at stacileavitt@gmail.com as private blogs are by invite only. You can also look me up on facebook. I would love to have more friends. I am trying to get more friends than my daughter Melissa! You've got 2 weeks to get me your address. Thanks!

Melissa turns 15!

It is hard to believe that my oldest daughter will be able to date and drive at night in a year. It has been so much fun to be her mom. She is such a hard working, never have to worry about kind of girl. I am so excited for her to be able to drive herself around in 5 months. She is playing volleyball in Twin again and it is a bit of a different experience this year. It isn't quite as "FUN" as it was last year. It is as if they tried to be too big this year and there are A LOT of inexperienced/don't know anything about volleyball girls playing, luckily most of Melissa's team has had some experience. Hopefully things will improve, after all, we have only been to one tournament. It is a lot of money and if we don't feel like it is money well spent we won't be doing it next year.
Anyway back to Melissa, she woke up too early for me to get her breakfast in bed because she had to look beautiful for the day at school. She opened a few presents from mom and dad and ironically they were clothes for her to wear to school. She loves clothes! Girls are definitely much more fun to shop for than boys! It is a bit hard to shop without her there to give a thumbs up or down but I managed to get her mostly surprises this year that were a hit!
Alan has a standing lunch date tradition with the kids on their birthdays. He picks them up from school and takes them out to the lunch of their choice, except for one year he took Rachel to the PDP for leftovers. They love this! It is also one thing that he can do that doesn't require too much preparation. I also have always made signs for the kids on their birthdays. In the past they were always homemade but we have slowly transferred to computer signs that dad makes! He comes up with some of the most witty sayings and he saves them so he can use them over again! (The kids don't know this but he does add a few new ones each year.)
After piano Melissa came home to an interesting meal that I thought would be to die for but, (long pause here) it was not so good. We all managed to shovel some down and gave the rest to Rusty who was most grateful and not picky at all!
We had a volleyball cake and ice cream and opened up more presents. For many years she has not had to go to school on her b-day and I think that she prefers that. At school everyone sang happy birthday to her in most of her classes. She was a bit disappointed to not get balloons from anyone so her aunt Jaime got her some the next day. Better late than never!

Allison Turns 4!

Allie turned four yesterday and we had a fun filled day! She has been so excited for her birthday to come since Abigail's birthday last June. She told me the night before her birthday that she wanted breakfast in bed and so I got up early to do that and she came up the stairs just as I was headed down and changed her mind.
She got to open up four presents before the kids left for school. She immediately put on two of her three outfits at the same time. She got a lot of little things that I am sure will be lost before the weekend is over. She even got her own computer game!
We went to Abigail's school and checked her out early so she could join in on the afternoon of fun. We went to McDonald's and it must have been mom's day out because they were packed! The girls had fun playing on the toys after lunch. After that we picked up Alan, Jaime and Lucas and headed to a new place in Twin called "Hop to it." I read about it on a friend's blog and decided to try it out. Laura brought Brighton and True to join in on the fun and Allie's friend MeKenna also came. They had so much fun going down the slides and bouncing around. "It was pretty fun", as Allie would say. We definitely will go during earlier in the day next time. It was pretty crowded.
I can't believe how time flies. It seems like only yesterday that I gave birth to sweet, little Allie. I remember what a beautifully shaped head that she had when she was born. She is growing up much too fast for me! (I must say though that as I watched Jaime scrambling all over the place with Lucas, it is nice not to have to worry so much about that anymore.) Allie is my little buddy. She keeps me company while the kids are at school. She loves to go shopping with me and she usually gets a treat out of me every time. She loves to draw, cut and play computer games. We are grateful for a computer tech at work that helps us fix all the funny things that the computer seems to do after she has touched it. She absolutely adores her sisters. Abby and her are the best of friends. They can make a mess in no time flat but they are joined at the hip whenever they are together. Allie started sunbeams this year and loves her teacher Sister Farnsworth. She is breaking out of her shell slowly but surely. She did great at including her friend and her cousin at the hopping place yesterday. I am so grateful that she is a part of our family. We love her to pieces!

Little Bit late - Our New Year's

We had great fun on New Year's Eve with Laura, Don & family and Ann and Sophia. My parents were also up for a few days. Some of the fun things that we did -
*We played a new Slider's game that Ann got us for Christmas.
*Don took the kids for a ride on the sled outside. Only Sarah and Ben managed to step in front of the sled and get knocked over. Sarah even braved it outside with the big, scary Rusty dog lurking around!
*We ate LOTS of food!
*We enjoyed playing Wii fit. I must say that this is a definite favorite of mine! I use it more than anyone else. The yoga on it has really helped my lower back! We laughed are heads off as we watched each other try and dodge soccer balls. Don spent many hours on the ski jump and so far holds the record.
*Some of us sang karaoke until we were out of breath. We were really sang loud and proud as Zach left the house with a friend to go to a New Year's Eve dance. I must say that Don sang about every song on the list! I am including a small little video of Laura and Melissa singing. Pretty cute!

Snow, snow, snow

The weather has been so unpredictable lately. We got so much snow in December and now it is just cold but sometimes it is in the 40's and you feel like shedding your coat. I wish I would have gotten some pictures of the trees yesterday, because they were all frosty and white. Here are some pictures of us enjoying the snow in December with Lucas.

Alan's Release

I remember 5 years ago I was struggling with Alan being called to be a bishop of our ward and now 5 years later I am sad that it has come to an end. No wonder man cannot figure out what woman wants because she doesn't even know herself! Alan was put in as bishop of our ward on January 4, 2004 and he will be released this afternoon, the 11th of Jan. 2009.
I have had an array of feelings since Brother Thornock called Alan on Tuesday to ask if the whole stake presidency could visit us on Thursday. We were pretty sure that they were coming to extend a release to Alan because when else does the whole stake presidency come to your house? I wasn't quite sure how to feel about his release. It was kind of funny that I felt anything at all because it is not my calling but it is Alan's. But when I really think about it, a calling to be a bishop is a calling that affects the entire family. I felt sad for Alan because I know that this calling has been one of his greatest joy's in the last 5 years and also one of his greatest sorrows.
I remember when Alan's dad (he was the stake president at the time) called Alan to serve as bishop of the 7th ward. I couldn't believe it - he should know better than anyone how this would impact our family. We were not even sure if we were done having children yet. I had visions of dragging the kids to church by myself (I already did that when Alan served as a counselor to John Crozier in the 1st ward and it was hard), and doing things on my own. I was also enjoying my calling in the stake primary presidency and I was worried that I would have to be released. (I do think that in normal circumstances that they would have but I pleaded not to be released because it was something that I loved and they continued to let me serve until the president's husband was call as a bishop). I literally shut myself up in my closet and cried. I was determined not to pray about it because really I already knew what the answer would be. The Holy Ghost is a funny thing and even if you are not willing it has a way of wiggling into your hard exterior and softening your heart.(It was probably because everyone was praying for it - see pray does work!) After finally getting on my knees and visiting with my Father in Heaven and also after a long conversation with my dad I felt at peace. I prayed that I would be able to accept Father's will. I prayed that I would be lifted up and be able to support my husband in this calling. I felt immediate peace and knew that I could do it. I knew at that moment that the calling did come from the Lord.
I am really grateful for the blessings that this calling has brought into my life, and in into my family's life. Five years ago you couldn't have told me that I would be sad when he was released, but I kind of am, in a bitter/sweet sort of way. I KNOW that we have been blessed as a family. I know that Heavenly Father has helped me personally and has lifted my burdens so that my husband could serve and come home to a happy wife, most of the time. Our business has prospered and life has been good to us. We have been able to do things and participate in things in the last 5 years, that we wouldn't have if we were not the bishop's family. We are all happy and healthy. We have great kids that have been very supportive and have enjoyed their dad serving as a bishop. They are all disappointed that their dad is being released except for Zach. He is tired of being referred to as the bishop's son. (One of his friends asked him if his dad was going to run for re-election.)
Some things that I am not going to miss are the funerals, being called sister bishop, Alan being gone, all the additional meetings he had to attend, or the never-ending welfare calls.
Being a bishop's family is a funny thing. One day you go from being the average, all-American Mormon family to being the ecclesiastical "BISHOP'S FAMILY". Why is it that the bishop's family goes from the average Joe to someone of great worth and importance in the matter of one day? Then after 5 years comes the release and you are expected to get back in line. Thousands have done it before us and thousands will do it after us.
I know that there is a greater purpose out there that we only get glimpses of and I do know that Heavenly Father knows what is best for each of us. I do know that other opportunities will come our way, and other doors will be opened. I do know that it is time to move on.
I am grateful for a wonderful, caring and dedicated husband. He is a great man and I am so lucky to be his wife! I love him so much! He will forever be the best bishop I have ever had! His heart is pure and his compassion for others is something I too hope to possess someday. He has been a great husband and father while serving as a bishop - he has always tried to put his family first and if there was a meeting he could shuffle around to attend a game for one of our children he would do it. I will never forget Sister Hendrickson in the first ward telling me that he was a father before he was put into the bishopric and that doesn't stop because he has other obligations and he will still be a father after he is done. Alan has never stopped being a father.
Alan seems to be doing alright with his release. I know that he has had an array of emotions this week from sadness to peace. I just can't wait to get it over with this afternoon so that we can move on and officially close this chapter in our lives.
Well it is all over with. Our new bishop is Dustin Olsen. He will do a great job. His counselors are a new guy and Walt Cooley. Alan did a wonderful job bearing his testimony and I blubbered all over the place for both of us. It feels kind of weird. I can't imagine what Alan must be feeling, probably a bit lost...... I don't know.

Read only with an empty bladder!

My sister Jaime encouraged me to blog about a funny pregnant moment I read to her over the phone this morning out of my journal with child #3 - Hannah. I was a little bit hesitant to write about it because it is a bit embarrassing but it really is just too funny to keep to myself! Only a woman who has had a child can really relate to my experience.... All you men out there can only imagine!
I was scheduled to have an ultrasound on June 12,1996 (Hannah was born the 25th of Oct.). During my last visit to the doctor the nurse told me that since my appointment was at 9:00 a.m. I should probably not use the bathroom that morning so that I could be sure and have a full bladder for a good ultrasound. I got up around 7:30 a.m. and if you have ever been pregnant before when ya gotta go, ya gotta go! So I went to the bathroom after having read an article that you should drink plenty of water an hour before having an ultrasound and since I was in the safe zone with 1 1/2 hours before my scheduled appointment that is what I did. After going to the bathroom I drank 3 very tall (about 16 oz. cups)glasses of water and about 8:15 a.m. I had to go to the bathroom again. So I went to the bathroom once more and drank 3 more tall glasses of water. At 8:30 a.m. I had to go again, so I went again to the bathroom and then drank 3 more tall glasses of water before we left for our Dr's appointment in Twin.
So in your mind picture us driving on our way to Twin Falls and once AGAIN my bladder felt like it was about to burst! I had Alan pull over to the one and only rest stop between Jerome and Twin Falls were I again went to the bathroom. I then drank a ton of water from the drinking fountain there. I don't know if you have ever drank water from a rest stop before but if you haven't let's just say that it is very warm and gross.
I went back to the car after drinking MORE water and sat down in my seat. Alan asked me if I was o.k. because I looked a little bit pale and sick to my stomach. No sooner had he said that had I opened up the door on my side of the car and threw-up straight liquid all over the pavement. When I felt that I had control I shut the door and then with no time to act I threw up on my pants. It now looked as if I had peed my pants! I couldn't go home because we were running a little bit late from our latest stop, so we proceeded to the Dr.'s office. I was trying to dry my pants out by having all the car vents pointed toward them on high heat in the middle of June. It was very obvious that they were not going to dry out before we got to the Dr.'s office so Alan suggested that I stick my pants out the window and surely with them flapping in the breeze they would mostly dry out. So having no pride at all, that is just what I did! I am sure it was very comical to see these very large pants flapping up and down in the air as we were driving down the road. By the time we got to the Dr.'s office the pants were a little bit damp but not noticeably wet. Even though I threw up about 2 gallons of water I seemed to have plenty more left in me because I had to go to the bathroom again! I told the nurse that I really had to use the bathroom and she said that she would hurry and do the initial ultrasound and then I could use the bathroom. Well I managed to make it through her exam and we did see Hannah tap dancing on my bladder (she probably was getting squished!). After she finished she asked me how I was doing and if I could hold it in until the Dr. came and did his short, little part. When I was trying to sit up I knew that I just couldn't hold it in any longer. The nurse told me to go the bathroom, but only just empty my bladder just a little bit. (Have you ever tried not to empty your bladder when it is at max capacity? Try it sometime....) So I went to the bathroom and emptied my bladder some, washed my hands and before leaving I went to the bathroom again! (Mind you, my bladder is still not empty...) I went back into my room and the Dr. still wasn't there and I told Alan and the kids that I would be right back. I then went to the bathroom again!!!!!! When I got back to the room the Dr. was in there waiting for me and during the exam I made the mistake and told him how very little Hannah seemed to be moving. So he took the wand and started pushing up and down on my stomach!!!! I was is complete agony and all Hannah did was just roll over! After the Dr. left I was finally able to fully empty my bladder and I bet I was in there for a solid 5 minutes!!!! I felt about 10 pounds lighter and much, much more comfortable!!!!! Also, at my next Dr.'s appointment I had only gained 1 pound compared to my 10 the month before!!!!
It truly was a life lesson for me. When they say drink one hour before the ultrasound they don't mean to drink 9 16 oz. glasses of water and some additional warm water from a drinking fountain.
When I was reading this to Jaime I was laughing so hard that tears were coming out of my eyes. I told her to make sure that her bladder is REALLY full for her ultrasound next week!!!!
